One of the fascinating little projects bubbling about on the MacRumors PPC forum has been an optimization of Leopard for PowerPC Macs called Sorbet Leopard.
I’m going to be clear – I’ve been following the thread, and some of it seems a little goofy. I am certain there are legit opportunities to optimize such an old OS, but your mileage is likely going to vary. The author/instigator/coder also did some work with a preference file intended to optimize TenFourFox, but I found that the optimizations made no different on my G5. Again, your mileage may vary.
Still, it’s fun to see such enthusiasm for our ancient PowerPC Macs.
Give Sorbet Leopard a shot. I’ll be taking a peek at it this weekend and seeing if it truly lives up to the hype as a fabled 10.5.9 update to our beloved Macs.

I have done 2 videos on this I think it is A fantastic update 10.5.9 Sorbet leopard And defiantly helps kept these PPC G4s G5s machines run better than Leopard ever could offer
I will have to check it out. Thanks for the tip!
Well I just installed it to my quad G5, and so far it is living up to the hype!! I did a clean install with CCloner, and kicked the tires to my delight to see my beastie running as it should. Tonight I will try a migration of my my leopard install and see if I can get my apps back without reinstalling software. Well done, it’s nice to use the quad again!!
Awesome! I am in the midst of the move, and I am planning on a reconfiguration of my G5 in the coming weeks as I get settled.
I celebrated by taking it up to 12 GB from 8 RAM…..hehe all is good all
Is working and now I’m debating going down the rabbit hole of SL for PPC. I might wait a bit on that……;)
What graphics card is compatible? My Radeon 9600 Pro is performing VERY poorly, with Halo now running at 8-10 fps at 800×600, all fancy settings turned off. Very disappointing.
